A Vedic Kundli is a birth chart that maps the positions of the nine planets, twelve houses, twelve signs, and twenty-seven nakshatras at the exact moment and place of your birth. Per classical Vedic texts including the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika, the Kundli is the foundation of every Jyotish technique — Vimshottari Dasha, muhurta, transits, divisional charts. Computed accurately, it stays valid for life. Computed wrong, every downstream prediction shifts.

What's in a Vedic Kundli?

A complete Vedic birth chart includes:

  • The nine planets (Navagraha): Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu — with exact degrees in their sign and nakshatra
  • The twelve houses (Bhavas): each representing a life area, with the house cusps computed from your local sidereal time
  • The Lagna (Ascendant): the sign rising at the eastern horizon at your birth moment — the anchor for the entire chart
  • The Moon's nakshatra: determines your starting Vimshottari Dasha period
  • Divisional charts (Vargas): D9 Navamsa (marriage and spiritual purpose), D10 Dasamsa (career), and others up to D60
  • Aspects (Drishti): which planets aspect each house and each other

Why calculation accuracy matters

Vedic astrology asks for precise planetary positions at the exact second of birth. Without a calculation engine, any model has to estimate where Mars or the Moon was on a specific date — and estimates create real downstream errors. Your Vimshottari Dasha period is calculated from your Moon's exact nakshatra position; if the Moon position is off by even a degree, the entire dasha timeline can shift by months.

The Swiss Ephemeris is a precision astronomical library built on NASA JPL planetary data — the same source used to navigate spacecraft missions. It locates planetary positions to a fraction of an arcsecond. When a Vedic astrologer opens their software today, that engine is what computes the chart underneath. Steer uses the same engine to build yours.

Questions to explore with your chart

Once your Kundli is on the page, here are natural next questions to explore.

What does my chart say about me?
When will I get married?
What does my chart say about my career?
Why does life feel hard right now — and when does it ease?
Will I get a chance to work abroad?
Is this relationship going to last?

How Steer generates your Kundli

1 Enter your birth details

Birth date, exact time, and place in the form above. The more precise your birth time, the more accurate your Lagna and dasha will be — even a few minutes can shift the Ascendant. If you don't know your time, you still get your Moon sign, planetary positions, and dasha timeline.

2 Private by design

Your birth details are never uploaded to any server. Enter them once and every Steer tool reuses them — they stay with you.

3 Read it, and explore further

Your D1 Rashi chart, Moon nakshatra, and key placements appear instantly. Enter your details once and every other tool on Steer — dasha, navamsa, transits, matching — opens with your chart already loaded.

What you get, free

  • The full chart, free. D1 Rashi, the Lagna, all nine planets with their signs, houses, and nakshatras — no signup.
  • Saved for one-click reuse. Enter your birth details once and every Steer tool opens already personalized to you.

Frequently asked questions

What's the minimum birth time accuracy I need?

For a usable chart, within a few minutes is fine — your dasha and most house placements will be accurate. For Lagna-sensitive techniques (when the Ascendant is near a sign cusp), within a minute is ideal. If you don't know your exact birth time, the chart still gives you your Moon sign, planetary positions, and Vimshottari Dasha timeline.

Sidereal or tropical zodiac?

Vedic (sidereal). Steer uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa — the standard in the Jyotish tradition. The sidereal zodiac differs from the Western tropical zodiac by approximately 24°.

What about kundli matching (Gun Milan / Ashtakoot)?

Steer offers free Ashtakoot kundli matching (the 36-point compatibility scoring) as a web tool — see the Kundli matching page. (Kundli matching is not part of the Steer Astro app inside ChatGPT.)

Is my birth data stored or uploaded anywhere?

No. The chart is computed in your browser with the Swiss Ephemeris engine, and your birth details are saved only on your own device so the other tools can reuse them in one click. Nothing is uploaded to any server. You can clear your saved details at any time with the "Forget" control on the chart.
