Compatibility

Ashtakoot Guna Milan —
the 36-point system

The Steer app's compatibility analysis between two saved profiles

Ashtakoot Guna Milan — described in the Prasna Marga and expanded in classical matching texts — assesses eight areas of compatibility between two people's Moon nakshatras and rashis. Each area has a maximum score; the total is out of 36. The Steer app computes all eight kutas, shows where a pair is strong and where they should be aware, and explains what each kuta measures.

All eight kutas scored Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Rashi, Nadi — each scored individually with a plain-English description of what it measures.
Strengths and cautions The app scores each kuta individually and identifies which ones are low, explaining what those areas mean in practice for a long-term partnership.
Dosha checks included Mangal Dosha and Nadi Dosha flags shown alongside the Guna Milan score, with the classical rules used for each determination.

Guidance from
both charts together

The Steer app's compatibility analysis between two saved profiles

Compatibility scores tell part of the story. The Steer app's AI astrologer can look at two charts together — comparing 7th house lords, Venus placements, relationship yogas in both D-1 and D-9 — and give guidance on how two people are likely to experience being together, where tensions may arise, and which periods ahead are favorable for the relationship.

Chart overlay analysis How the planets in one chart aspect the houses in the other. Where there is natural harmony and where friction is likely to concentrate.
Partners, family, and colleagues Not only romantic compatibility. Ask about a parent-child dynamic, a sibling relationship, or a work partnership. The same chart-based analysis applies.
Timing for the relationship Which upcoming dasha periods are favorable for deepening commitment, and which may bring tests that need attention.
The eight kutas

What each kuta measures

Ashtakoot (eight-point) Guna Milan assesses eight distinct areas of compatibility between two people's nakshatra placements. Together these total 36 points.

Varna — 1 point

Spiritual compatibility and harmony between the two individuals' work orientation and values. The foundation of mutual respect.

Vashya — 2 points

Mutual influence and attraction. Whether the two natures naturally draw toward each other or require effort to connect.

Tara — 3 points

Longevity and wellbeing of the relationship over time, based on the distance between the two Moon nakshatras.

Yoni — 4 points

Physical and intimate compatibility. Each nakshatra corresponds to an animal symbol; compatible pairs score more highly on this kuta.

Graha Maitri — 5 points

Intellectual and emotional compatibility based on the friendship between the lords of the two Moon signs. The most points in the system.

Gana — 6 points

Temperamental compatibility. Nakshatras are grouped as Deva (divine), Manava (human), and Rakshasa (fierce). Matched ganas score maximum points.

Rashi — 7 points

Compatibility based on the relationship between the two Moon signs and their ruling planets. Scores the general harmony of the partnership.

Nadi — 8 points

Health and progeny compatibility. The single highest-valued kuta. Same-nadi matches score 0 and are traditionally considered a concern requiring attention.
