Vimshottari Dasha, described in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and expanded in the Phaladeepika, divides the 120-year human life cycle among nine planets in a fixed sequence. Each planet rules a major period (Mahadasha) of different lengths: the Sun's period lasts 6 years, Venus's lasts 20, Saturn's 19. Each planet rules a major period of different length. The sequence is fixed; your starting point is determined by the Moon's nakshatra position at your birth.
